The Carbon G.Viper shoes are Gaerne’s top-of-the-line disco daps aimed at those who are serious about their cross-country riding – and emptying their wallets. Weighing in at 840g for the pair (size 42, with cleats), they’re certainly up there with the best of them weight-wise.
There’s ample clearance from the cleat to the treads, which helps avoid clogging, but the tread material is firm so walking on wet rocks or roots can be slippery. The double Velcro closure, coupled with a micro-adjustment buckle makes it really easy to achieve an excellent fit. The insole offers great support and a good amount of cushioning on rougher terrain.
The mesh panels on the upper combat overheating but this does mean they’re not exactly watertight. Power transfer is excellent thanks to the carbon sole but there’s enough give to walk without waddling. There’s the tiniest hint of heel slip but nothing that really ever bothered us.The toebox is plenty tough and has shrugged off knocks without a problem.
