The Ignition three-quarter length short isn’t made from waterproof fabric and doesn’t have taped seams, but we’ve found it pretty damn hard to find riding conditions it can’t cope with.

Designed for downhill use, this short is still light enough to use cross-country, and while it gets warm when you’re putting the work in, it doesn’t get quite as sweaty as waterproofs.

We’ve been wearing them with a lightweight liner underneath rather than full Lycra shorts to help prevent overheating.

The fabric, 330D denier nylon, is super durable, which helps it shrug off the worst of that gritty winter mud. But it’s with the cut that this short really wins. 

The shaped hips and waist create a great fit, with easy-to-use adjusters providing the final bespoke touch. All this styling detail makes for a short that doesn’t slip around or get caught on the saddle.

They look bulky, with their waterproof zips and rubberised logos, but ride light and comfortable. The 14in length is good and the cut is superb, with room to accommodate armour. They also feature laser-cut venting and four pockets.

If you’re out all day in the depths of winter, then a short with guaranteed waterproof protection is a more practical option. 

But if you’re nipping out for a couple of hours and need to keep the worst of the weather off, but without sacrificing your technical edge, then look no further. We’ve been thrashing these shorts for over a year with no apparent wear, and you can’t say much better than that.
