Fox Demo Freestyle shorts £85

Not a cheap option, but an excellent one

BikeRadar score 4.5/5

Fox's Demo shorts edge ahead of the pack simply because they feel just right and are the sort of hardwearing, practical shorts most of want as a staple in our riding wardrobes.

The fabric has a high degree of stretch that works with the cut to give a close – but not tight – fit through the hips. Add in the high-backed waist and stretchy back yoke and the result is a pair of shorts that doesn’t move around when you do. The legs are just baggy enough without being flappy, and stay in place over your knees without twisting or pulling up when you pedal.

Venting is via mesh at the back and laser cut holes in the crotch – simple but effective. Definitely not for show, all the pockets are generously deep and secured with water-resistant zips. If shorts are going to be uncomfortable anywhere it’s usually around the waist, so we especially like Fox’s solution – a deep band with a chunky zip fastener that, instead of the usual button or popper at the top, has a flap fastened with a ratchet instead.

This is secure and easy to adjust, and comfortable too because there’s nothing to dig in. We’re thinking post-Christmas here...
