From the masters of reasonably priced mountain bike products comes this cracking value device. We chose the bottom bracket fit, but you can get a seat tube clamp (31.8 and 34.9mm diameters) for £3 more. While you don’t get refinements such as retained nuts for ease of fitting (you have to get a spanner onto the nut at the back) or the minimalist looks of the MRP and e*thirteen, you do get a device that works perfectly well.
With such a wide ring adjustment range we found the aluminium backplate reaching high above the guide when we ran our 36-toother. This detracted from the minimalist look but wasn’t a big deal.
Once fitted (instructions aren’t included) the guide gave plenty of leg room for the chain, allowing it to change through our 10-speed setup without rubbing. With the guide snugly down over the sides of the ring there was no danger of the chain coming off either.
There’s a huge range of colours, and you can choose the backplate (black, red, gold, lime green, orange, blue) and guide (white, black, blue, yellow, red, lime green, orange) colours independently for a huge number of combinations. You also get a two-year warranty, so there are no worries about premature breakage.
