Control Tech 2X9 Chainrings (09) | $69
BikeRadar verdict
"At last, gearing for 2x9 setups when big climbs are on the menu"
Using a double chainset off-road instead of the normal triple makes sense with Controltech’s interesting ring sizes.
The 40t outer ring is smaller than anyone else’s (normally 42/44), ensuring low ratios and a high cadence for more mountainous areas.
Hard 7075 T6 alloy shows good wear, while a 94mm bolt circle diameter will fit any mountain bike compact double crank. Shifting is smooth and precise thanks to steel pins, machined ramps and profiled teeth.
It’s hard to criticise a component that simply does it’s job. We’ll know more about ring durability after further testing.

40t in a dual setup for "more mountainous areas"? What?
The usual 2x9 setup for bigger mountains is something like 22/36.

Timer.. you are thinking of a 3x9 setup but with the outer ring removed. Not quite the same...

Or you could consider the Middeburn Duo which gives you the choice of:
Inner - 27, 29 or 32; and
Outer - 40, 42 or 44.
Okay you have to buy the cranks as well but I really do not think that can be counted as a disadvantage. The RS7 is an all time classic, been around for years and still cutting it with the best.

No mention of the inner ring at all???? What size(s)?

These are designed as an XC race double for people who may not have any use for a piddly little 22t ring. Don't confuse it with the double and bash setup you may have on your "all mountain" bike, these are designed for a different set of riders with a different purpose in mind.

So, no need to pedal hard on the DH bits then?!
I remember the old days before compact drive when I had a 50t for ultimate speed!
I use middleburn RS7's - seriously the best set of cranks in existence. XC lightweight & even guaranteed for DH & dirt jumping!
And the RS8 is lighter again, but no jumping!
