Magura Marta SL Brake | $358
BikeRadar verdict
"Impressively light and powerful brake, but certainly not that cheap"
Magura’s unmistakeable red anodised Marta SL brakes are hugely popular among pro racers, and it’s easy to see why.
The Marta’s weight is kept low by the use of a single-piece cold-forged calliper, and the (much-imitated) minimalist right-angled lever body design with skinny carbon fibre lever. The Marta produces an impressive amount of power from the skeletal wavey rotor, too, and a very welcome new 203mm option sidesteps the potential warping problems of smaller rotors on long drags.
Racers won’t complain about the lack of bite point adjustment, while IS or post mount options make fitting nice and easy. Pad life is good if you break them in gently, and mineral oil is a lot easier on the environment and your paintwork than DOT fluid.
Martas can occasionally be snatchy in use, though, and you’re not getting the power and low-weight combination for free, because they’re pricey.
