Fox 32 Vanilla R (09) | $491.17
BikeRadar verdict
"The smoothness, value and simplicity advantages of coil, without the downsides"
It may come with a quick-release skewer rather than a screw-through axle, but the Fox 32 Vanilla is so smooth and well damped that overall control is still outstanding for the money.
Now RockShox’s coil-sprung Revelation isn’t readily available, this simple coil-sprung fork is in a class of its own. At less than 2kg, the Van avoids the usual downsides of coil forks. Gradual evolution means the 09 fork is actually 94g lighter than last year’s fork, with no loss of stiffness.
Damping changes means it’s even better in prolonged chaos situations too and overall action is outstandingly smooth. The only downside is that 15mm axles are only available on the £499 RLC model, but the extra steering stiffness is still worth it.

...at £170 extra for the 15 axle version, not forgetting a new hub and wheel build, is it worth the cash for 'lock-out'?

Fox made a batch of 2009 Vanilla R's with QR15 axle. You can get them for about £300; probably the best deal for a coil sprung trail fork you can get at the moment.

I bought one of the 2009 Vanilla R's with QR15 axle. Like 'Qki28' has said previously it is worth every penny. I don't bother with twiddly knobs, I just like to ride so this fork suites me in that respect. However, it's also nice and stiff, very light, has superb damping and the travel is very smooth. The bottom line is it's an awesome trail fork!

Fantastic fork, Got mine from leasure lake £330 with the 15mm through axle, On a R version of the fork. Its just fit and forget. That simple. No oil leaks no air leaks. Just a bit of teflon round the seals after every bike wash, Compress the forks, Wipe off any excess, Job done.
