"A pedal for riders who favour durability over absolute light weight"

By Justin Loretz

Shimano’s ground-breaking SPD pedal has been evolving for 20 years, and this is the latest incarnation – the top-of-the-range XTR.

It’s not especially light for a race pedal, and while it’s better than ever at dealing with mud, it’s not in the same league as Time’s ATAC or Crank Brothers’ Eggbeater in thick winter mud.

What it does have, though – and what Crank, Time and Look would give their right arm for – is the best entry/exit manners of any pedal from any manufacturer. That’s helped by a slippery fluoride coating to the adjustable tension jaws.

Let’s not forget the SPD’s unbeatable durability, either. These pedals will spin silkily like new, even after submersion in crank-deep Welsh bogs and regular death by jet spray and a diet of rock strikes.

Put it like this: in the days after the nuclear apocalypse, we’re confident that the only working mechanical object will be a Shimano XTR SPD.

If you simply want a pedal that works flawlessly in 98 percent of riding conditions, and has class-leading bearings and sealing, get these.
