Panaracer's UK-designed Trailraker is still probably the best pure winter tyre around.

The tall, sharp-edged centre and shoulder knobs dig deep into soft ground for incredible grip in the stickiest, wettest trail conditions. The tapered design means it clears really fast to keep the grip coming and stop you getting weighed down, and the broad-base knobs keep the tyre more secure than pure spike treads when you hit harder surfaces or road. ZSG dualcompound rubber increases centre tread life and enhances corner grip. It's still a buzzy, slow ride on smooth stuff but light enough to accelerate well.

Narrow, 1.95in or 2.1in carcasses dig deep for a secure footing, although they roll at low pressures. The UST tubeless version is much more secure and soft running and there's a highdensity carcass BAX version with a claimed 50 per cent increased puncture resistance. Pricing is average but then the Trailraker is untouchable when the trails are in a proper bad state.
