"Hefty but impressively strong quick-release wheels for minimum money"

This is 24seven's budget all-mountain wheelset and it's just over half the price of the higher-end Supercross sets. The wheels are tough, thanks to the broad 31mm eyeleted rims, the machined sidewalls mean they'll work with rim brakes and they come pre-fitted with 24seven rim tape.

The wheels stayed perfectly round after some serious abuse and the 32 spokes haven't needed any truing work yet. Large flange hubs keep the spokes shorter and stronger and the bearings spin smoothly, with a nice tight take-up on the free-hub. They're well sealed by rubber covers and there's also a large dollop of grease placed on the drive side. The wheels are only quick-release compatible though and they're not light.

Best Budget

If you have no more than £200 to spend on your wheels, then your options are a bit limited, but you can still pick up a tough set to suit your riding.

The 24seven Silver Star wheelset is our clear winner in the budget selection. They're remarkably cheap but thoroughly cheerful - they're also reliable and impressively jump proof, although they're limited to use on bikes with quick-release compatible forks and frames.

The super strong Halo SAS wheelset is worth considering as well - the wheels are super versatile and will fit any sort of bike with only a few seconds' work. We have heard of durability issues with the freehubs on Halo wheels, although regularly flushing the freehub body out with oil will make them last longer.
