Lazer Magma helmet review£70.00

Breezy budget XC lid

BikeRadar score3.5/5

Lazer’s hybrid lid, updated this year, offers more rear protection than most XC helmets and its super light weight makes it ideally suited to long rides.

At 308 grams, the Magma is a more than acceptable weight for the money and, when combined with that ventilation, it feels light and comfortable on the head, without any tight spots or pressure points. There are only four pads in the Magma – three over the top and a long one running across the forehead. This copes well with sweat, minimising drops into the eyes.

The 22 vents carved into the Magma's shell do a brilliant job of keeping your head cool. The internal channels may not be the deepest, but the shape and location means they perform very well.

That said, the sizing feels on the large side, and there’s certainly more movement in the helmet when it’s on the head. The large ARS cradle hugs your head securely, with the top mounted adjustment dial helping pull it in, but it feels like the helmet floats around on top of the retention system. This means it’s vital to try the Lazer on before buying to see if your head shape gets on with this shape and system.

Overall construction is good; the retention system feels well made and we didn’t have any issues with the mechanism.

The hardshell doesn’t extend to cover the bottom edge of the inner shell so it needs a bit more TLC than fully encased lids. The fixed peak also gives little protection from sun or rain at the sides.
