"The Chamonix is the best 30 quid lid you can buy"

By Dan Joyce, Cycling Plus

For a cheap helmet, the Specialized Chamonix is light (235g for the medium size), tough and very well vented. You could race in this.

The Form Fit cradle is easy to adjust and in conjunction with the foam pads gives a comfortable, secure fit on a variety of head shapes. The straps are easy to adjust, and there’s a clip-on visor for off-road use, though it looks equally at home without it.

Even when riding hard, the Chamonix stays reasonably cool – despite lacking side vents – because the vertical rear slots are very effective.

The real ace in the pack, though, is that it’s Snell approved. Hardly any helmets that aren’t full face get a Snell B90A certificate these days because it’s a stringent standard that requires the lid to survive more impacts, at greater velocity, on a wider range of anvil shapes.

Helmets sold in the EU only have to pass EN 1708, which is easier to meet. Does it matter? Well, the purpose of a helmet is to protect your head…

It’s available in black, red or silver and S, M or L – go get one if you’re looking to go lightweight on a budget.
