Just in: CrankBrothers Joplin 4

By James Costley-White

We've just got hold of the new 4in-drop CrankBrothers Joplin seatpost for testing, and very nice it looks too.

As well as an extra inch of travel, the post boasts new internals – better seals and a second guide-block to combat sideways wobble – and a reinforced clamp.

It's 400mm long, and slightly heavier than the original Joplin because of the increased drop (more metal and more oil). Our 31.6mm lever version is claimed to weigh 530g, compared to 485g for the 3in version.

The Joplin 4 is available in 30.9mm and 31.6mm diameters (the promised 27.2mm post is still in the pipeline). RRP is US$250 (approx £150 at current exchange rate) for the lever version and $285 (approx £175) for the 4R version with handlebar remote.

Look out for a review in an upcoming issue of Mountain Biking UK magazine and on BikeRadar soon.

  • Can't possibly have worse reliability than the previous one. Wa shockingly bad, even by their standards.

  • Thanks for being one of the guinea pigs for things :) I love the idea waiting for them to improve the price/weight/reliability of these things.

It's the side-side wobble that puts me off too. Do you find it noticable/annoying?

  • I've been waiting for an improved version, when, when, WHEN?!

  • Still only 4"...

The pure race 900 remote that I have is still going strong after 1500 miles (even after doing the mega), and that is 125mm / 5" drop

Any indication on the price for this one?

My ideal post would have a drop of 8" as I still run my pure race 3" above the collar on my Wolf Ridge, however I appreciate that not every bike rider has the saddle 8" above the collar as this can differe between inside leg measurements and frame shapes and sizes

  • 8''??? God you really have 8 inches of difference between you climbing and downhill saddle position? I've got around 1.5'' difference, possibly up to 3'' on my AM bike. 8'' seems way too much. Unless you're using the same bike to do pure DH and pure XC...

  • I been running a Joplin since they first replaced the Speedballs (18 months) and just had my first failure. Not catastrophic but a slow sinking after each ride. To be fair 2Pure sorted it pretty rapidly with rebuild including a replacement glide and updated seal.

I quickly leart that the seals were useless - especially as I run the bike all year round up here in 7-stanes country. Best thing I did was fit a cut down Lizardskins neoprene shock boot over the shaft and that stops 80% of crud on wet rides.

I don't really notice the sideways slop when riding but perhaps I have adjusted to it now.

  • Hi Tomwarren,

Check out this link to a review of, what could be, just what you're looking for;-

It's still going strong and turns my XC Santa Cruz Chameleon into a BMX track weapon at the flick of a switch!
