There's only so much technology you can pack into a pair of shorts, but Sugoi have tried to cram a lot into the RSX (£109.99 / $180) to create a top-of-the-line pair of baggy mountain bike shorts. The lightweight construction features a slightly stretchy outer fabric, along with mesh panelling bonded to the shorts, to offer additional venting and breathability. The biggest feature is the use of the BOA L5 system. BOA dials are more commonly found on race shoes, where a dial pulls a lightweight wire as a fastening device. The waist of the RSX short can be adjusted with the BOA system, to ensure a good fit and keep the weight low. A rear pocket adds a bit of storage. You can find more information at www.sugoi.com and the UK distributors are www.cyclingsportsgroup.co.uk.

There’s nothing worse than getting oil and muck on your carpets, and it can be an unfortunate problem for many who don’t have a garage, but do have bikes. Muc-Off have come to the rescue with their foldable Bike Mat (£10.99/$15.00) – effectively a sheet of rip-stop plastic which goes under your bike during storage or maintenance. Conveniently, it has with handles and a tab to keep it folded, so you can easily chuck it in your car, and it folds away without it taking up loads of space. You can get one from www.muc-off.com.

These unmissable Oak Pro knee guards (£129.99 / $149.95) from Italian company Dainese feature a soft, multi-impact protective shell over the knees and mid-way down the shins. Their main feature is the use of the BOA system to secure the pads, more often seen on high-end road shoes. A simple twist of a dial tightens the thin steel wires, tightening the bands around your leg. Pulling the dial up releases the tension to aid removal. Silicon grippers also help keep things in place, while a cutaway at the back and venting on the front should help cool things down. Look out for a full review soon and see www.windwave.co.uk or www.dainese.com for more information.
