Mountain bike skills area opens at Coed Llandegla

By Matthew Cole

A new skills area is now open at the Coed Llandegla mountain bike trail centre near Wrexham, North Wales.

Built using a grant from Forestry Commission Wales’s Better Woodlands for Wales scheme, the new park is suitable for riders of all abilities and has four sections:

  • Basic technique area
  • Freeride area
  • Pump track
  • Dual slalom track

Llandegla has also received a Forestry Commission grant to build an extra 10.5km of off-road trails.

Dave Liddy, FC Wales's visitor management adviser, said : "Last year, more than 410,000 cyclists visited the world-class biking centres in Wales, bringing millions of pounds into the Welsh economy, but we're keen to encourage those new to the sport to learn and practise bike techniques before they set off into the woods."

There’s good news for Wales’s other trail centres too – plans are afoot for skills areas at Coed-y-Brenin, Afan Argoed and Cwmcarn. For more information head to the Coed Llandegla website.

  • I think riders should be graded in order to acertain that they meet a minimum, predetermined safe level of skill before they're allowed onto the new skills area. Full face helmets and armour should be encouraged and made available for hire.

The nature of the skills area means your going to get a lot of riders pushing there limits which is inevetably going to lead to a lot of accidents.

I also wonder how this is going to work in the busy summer months when you'll have 10s possibly hundreds of riders all trying to use it at the same time.

I was up there last week and the new area is a fantastic facility. My advice is to get up there sooner rather than later as come summer you won't be able to get any where near it.

  • I can't wait to try the new skills area at Coed Llandegla as i have rode there countless amounts of times, last time i went the skills area was not fully open to the public and it looked like a real good area for all ages to try out and pick up all types of riding technique.
