Rachel Atherton collides with car in training accident

By Matthew Cole

2008 women’s downhill mountain bike world champion Rachel Atherton was involved in a training accident with a car on January 19th, sustaining a dislocated shoulder and cuts to the face.

According to early reports, Atherton hit the car head-on while riding her Cervelo road bike – which took most of the impact of the crash. She was training with her brothers Gee and Dan.

Further information about her injuries will be available later today when she sees a specialist, but the team hope she will be fit to race in the first round of the mountain bike World Cup in April

Further updates and more pictures from the aftermath of the crash can be found on the Animal Commencal team website.

  • Personal experience says this hurts but the physio is worse, Good physio sorted mine out fairly quickly 6 - 8 weeks if I rember rightly.

  • osxboy - They have physio that make you work day and night towards injury wich saves considerable amount of time! but stilll....

I really hope she gets well, my niece who'se only 8 loves watching her videos on youtube and wants to be just like her... :(

I really hope she gets well soon, as role models like Rachel Atherton and Shanneza Reade that are insopiration of our younger ones today :)

    Get well soon ^^,

  • Get well soon Rachael :(

  • I am the owner of the pick up that was involved in the accident. I am sure that being on the wrong side of the road was an honest mistake. how ever Rachel has made no attempt to contact me and has not returned several emails that I have written to her team website. In addition almost 2 months later and the CHP report is still not done due to their inability to obtain her contact information.

this was a mistake but it is her responsibility to pay for damages to my truck witch totaled in over 3,500$ that I can't afford to fix and shouldn't have to. She already admitted to her irresponsibility not wearing a helmet how about not paying for the damages she caused.
