Sherwood Pines launch new dirt jump
Mountain bikers are being given the chance to defy gravity with the opening of a spectacular dirt jump zone in Sherwood Pines Forest Park, Nottinghamshire.
The Forestry Commission has unveiled the development as part
of a massive £300,000 project to create a National Cycling Centre of Excellence
in the historic wood, near
Complete with hair-raising jumps - up to two metres tall - ramps, twists and turns, it has been designed to cater for bikers of all abilities, including beginner, intermediate and expert (denoted by skull and cross bones waymarking to warn the unwary).
Local riders helped in both design and construction work during volunteer “dig days”, when up to 25 off-road fans turned up, giving them a stake in its future.
Chris Bray, Forestry Commission recreation manager, said: “The jump zone is the first element in the Centre of Excellence blueprint to come online. There’s enough to stretch hardcore bikers, but with scope for the less experienced to improve their technique. Our goal has been to create something which is fun, sustainable and offers a real challenge.”
Jump zone features have already been given colourful names, including the “origin of the species” and the “Siamese twins.” The area has been built away from conservation and archaeological sites and will also help reduce possible conflicts with other forest users, including walkers and horse riders.
Chris Bray added: “Dirt jumping is a grassroots sport, so getting bikers involved from the start strikes the right note and allows it to develop organically. It’s already proving a huge hit.”
The National Cycling Centre of Excellence project, which was launched last year, has been backed by £147,500 from the Alliance SSP programme.

Other upgrades will include new bike lockers, shelters and a

This has been open for a while now, we regularly go up to the jump park. Although it's in serious need of some bins or summat as there's rubbish everywhere already!

Sherwood Pines sux tbh. The lack of decent singletrack and markers to show the way, the lack of hills, the time it takes the bike shop to do repairs and then give you back your bike virtually untouched with an invoice attached, and yes the lack of bins at the jump section (but then again if the kids can carry the food and drink to the site then they can carry the litter home.
Basically its just firetrack and more firetrack.

There is LOADS of singletrack if you can be arsed to go and explore.. If you have been and had a bad day, then you have missed out.. there really is plenty there for all but hardcore DH'ers..
Its good enough for a premier XC race, so can't be that bad can it ?

Lack of decent singletrack?? There's around 40 miles of singletrack in the pines which can be linked into decent 10-15 mile circuits without touching a single fire-road.
No hills maybe, but there's enough gradient to make it a decent enough venue for national level competitions.
The one thing I will say, is that the new singletrack in terms of construction is below standard. The routes and lines are awesome but the way in which the trails have been built are poor. Having seen a slight bit of use they are cutting up already, I just hope the FC are prepared to do a lot of maintenance due to poor design.
The natural singletrack in the pines is much better

Bins !?!? kids want everything these days !. I went there two weeks ago and the place was a dump ! it is not looked after by the users and they do not deserve to use the place.
I don't need a bin when I go out riding I take my rubbish back with me and so should the selfish people that use this jump park.
Come on ! your giving us a bad name !

i regularly go up to sherwood pines and ride the dirt jumps, unfortunatly no one really cares about picking up litter, as for myself i will take it back and put it in a bin, but most dont. excluding the rubbish problems i believe that sherwood pines dirtjump area is great, it may not be fantastic but if your a dirt jumper u should love it.especially when the weathers good you can get alot of riders down there and an audience as aloty of people pass through. as for the single track theres plenty, you just need patience to find it.so if you plan on going dont intend to follow routes just explore and have fun!also dont forget tht there still in the process of making new routes so dont judge them just yet.

If you want advice on the new waymarked XC route there is a thread in the forums here "sherwood pines...any good?????" the dirt jump is half way round the new XC course in the far corner from the visitor centre
Go to google maps, centre the map over sherwood pines and do a search for "dirt jump"
Leave only tyre tracks, take home only memories (and broken limbs)
