Specialized recalls 2D helmet

By BikeRadar

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Specialized Bicycles, today announced a voluntary recall of the Specialized 2D helmet. Consumers in the US should stop using the recalled helmet immediately unless otherwise instructed. This advice does not apply to helmets bought in the UK as these were built in a different batch.

According to Specialized and the CPSC, although no incidents or injuries have been reported, the China-made 2D helmets fail testing required under CPSC's safety standard for bicycle helmets. This can pose a head injury hazard to riders in a fall. About 3,000 helmets are affected by this recall.

This recall only applies to 2D helmets in the U.S. and Canada; all helmets in Europe and Australia are still certified to CE and AUS standards and will remain unaffected by the recall. There have been no reported cases of failure or injury in any region.

As shown in the photo, the model "2D" is printed on the sides of the helmet in the rear. The helmets were sold for men and women in matte black, white, silver, blue, pink, and team colors, through its authorized retailers and online stores between July 2007 and October 2007 for about US$200.

According to the CPSC, consumers should stop using the recalled helmet immediately and return it to an Authorized Specialized Retailer.

Specialized is currently replacing all affected helmets with a complimentary Specialized Decibel helmet until new helmet shipments arrive in January. Consumers affected by the recall can then expect to receive a new S-Works helmet, formerly the 2D, along with a hard carrying case.

For more information, contact Specialized toll-free at (877) 808-8154 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mountain Time Monday through Friday, or visit the company's website.

  • I've just received this email from Specialized UK regarding 2D helmets in the UK.

"Just had confirmation from the US.

We’ve been conducting a recall on the US/CPSC version 2D only. We had some inconsistent results in production QC impact testing, reported it to the CPSC as required and started a recall. The US/CPSC version has been redesigned and goes back into production next week. Male clip was not holding in some tests.

Meanwhile we retested the CE version at outside test labs to the CE standard and found absolutely no issues. We also contacted the TNO lab in the Netherlands that certified the CE version and disclosed all issues about the recall of the US/CPSC version to them. They have also confirmed there is no problem with the CE version.

Similarly, we have confirmed the Australia/New Zealand version is fine.

The recall is limited to the US/CPSC version only.

The web link you sent gives the impression that all 2Ds are recalled. But I think it will be unclear to CE consumers that it is only the US/CPSC version. "

Hope this helps any 2D wearers in the UK.

  • I was wondering why Specialized chose that CHINA manufacturer to help them produce the helmet and to put "specialized" logo on them. If the CHINA-produced are not quality-reliable, why not ask those specialized specialists worker in USA to do the job? I will say that "specialized" have to share equal responsibility with that China manufacturer!

The only good news that those"specialized" bring us is no accident reported and nobody hurt!
