Just 14 months after his retirement, Olympic and former world
champion mountain biker Miguel Martinez
has announced his comeback to the sport.
But while the Frenchman will contest selected off-road
event events next season, his main focus will be on road racing. A contract
with the Amore e Vita team which holds a UCI Continental licence will
enable him to take part in Pro Tour events.
Martinez
has previous experience of road racing with the Mapei team in 2002 and with Phonak the following year,
finishing 44th in the Tour de France during his stint with the
former. “I always rode to the best of my ability without doping it was made
clear to me that I wasn’t operating in the way that was required. Today I really
have the impression that things have changed. I’m convinced that cycling has
moved in the right direction and I want a second chance to continue my career
at the highest level.”
