Sidi launches new website

By Gary Boulanger, US editor

Italian cycling shoe maker Sidi has launched a new website to reflect their 2008 line.

We found the new site, available in Italian or English, to be a bit on the slow side initially, due to the new Flash technology and the pseudo-techno Italian soundtrack. The barefoot guy in the Italian suit adds a nice touch, though, explaining the new shoe features.

The new site was created by Fishouse, an award-winning Italian design firm.

  • It's a terrible website.

    * There's no search, or sorting. How do I find shoes fit my cleat system?

    * The HTML is horrible. They've made no effort to make it accessible.

    * I have to turn the music of and centre the page before I can use the site - there's no need for the horizontal scrollbar on my screen.

    * Oh, and the downloads area goes here: http://www.fishouse.it/~sidi/ciclo/

This is just from a quick look. They could have employed someone who has an idea about building modern websites and/or usability. Their return would be greater customer satisfaction, customer loyalty, and search engine ranking.

I am (genuinely) considering buying some Sidis but this site does nothing to help my. I would link to the page showing the shoes I'd like, but oh, I can't as it's all a big slow Flash file. It doesn't seem like a site worth promoting.

  • I'm in complete agreement with Ed. The site is almost unusable. Unfortunately someone persuaded them that a cool visual treatment was more important than making it easy for users to find and research their products. The spinning product selector is awful... and I wasn't able to find any detailed information on the shoes I'd spun into focus. Too bad, I might have bought a pair of Sidi casual shoes.

Cycling companies seem particularly prone to lousy site design.

    Briko: http://briko.com/jspbriko/index.jsp (extremely slow loading)

For an example of an edgy site that works, and they provide a simple catalog pdf, Knog does a pretty good job

Amazing with all the good examples of how to do product sites, that companies can get it this wrong.

  • I gave up before even getting to the information! I have broadband, and a high-tech setup. Inexcusable to have to wait so long for each page to load. What a dumb idea...
