FSA Afterburner Megaexo

By BikeRadar

We've always been impressed by FSA's tough hollow-armed Afterburner in conventional format, and the integrated MegaExo version has lost none of its trademark durability. In fact, the hollow forged arms are beefed up even further for 2006.

The neat four bolt CNC spider is still held on by a lockring though, rather than built in one piece, but it doesn't seem to affect stiffness underfoot and the Afterburner is a great choice for heavy duty or just heavy riders looking for something burlier than a normal XC crank. That toughness is reflected in the increased weight, although it's no heavier than Race Face'sAtlas. Powerful riders will appreciate the stiff, smooth shifting 'semi-solid' chainrings and the FSA logo bolts are a nice touch. Just remember to put the rare Torx T30 wrench they need somewhere safe when you open the box. Like other manufacturers, FSA seems to have totally sorted initial durability troubles with external BBs, and the Mega Exo unit has lasted fine so far. Shimano style - but not compatible - double pinch bolt offside arm fitting makes installation and removal a breeze too, and it's plenty secure. Check all the bolts regularly though, just in case. And, finally, pricing is very good compared to its competitors.
