Next season's US National Racing Calendar has been announced by the country's national federation, USA Cycling.
The 2008 NRC will consist of 35 races, starting with the Santa Rosa Women's Grand Prix in California on February 19th and ending with the Priority Health Grand Cycling Classic in Grand Rapids, Michigan on September 6th-7th. Over US$1.1million in prize money is up for grabs, split between the men ($688,000) and women ($523,000).
There are several changes to the NRC from last year, the biggest being the removal of the six elite national championship events (men's and women's road, time trial and criteriums). According to USAC, this was done to reduce the advantage to clubs and teams with a greater number of American riders on their rosters.
To counter this, seven new events have been added: the AT&T Austin Downtown Criterium, Louisville Metro Police Foundation Criterium, Priority Health Grand Cycling Classic (M/W), Santa Rosa Women's Grand Prix, Susan G. Komens Cycle for the Cure, Tulsa Tough Ride and Race (W only) and Cox Charities Cycling Classic (M only). In addition, four past NRC events have been reinstated: the Tour of Utah, Fitchburg-Longsjo Classic, Sunny King Criterium and Nalley Historic Roswell Criterium.
The 2007 NRC saw Australian Rory Sutherland (Health Net presented by Maxxis) and Laura Van Gilder (Cheerwine) winning the overall individual titles, while Health Net presented by Maxxis and Webcor Builders won the men's and women's team titles.
