After spending several weeks holed up in his Alicante home following the announcement of a positive drug test at last September's Vuelta a Espa¤a, for Vuelta winner Aitor Gonzalez is now reported to be back into full training in the expectation that his positive test will be overturned.

Gonzalez tested positive in two controls at the Vuelta for an anabolic steroid, but he and his legal team maintain that the result was caused by use of a contaminated nutritional product.

The Spaniard and his legal team are hoping that scientific evidence will lead to him being acquitted of any wrongdoing. This evidence was presented evidence to the Spanish federation's competitions committee last month.

Gonzalez's legal representative said before Christmas that the rider, who was not retained for another season by Euskaltel as a result of the case, had fallen into a deep depression. However, according to El DiarioVasco, last year's winner of the Tour of Switzerland has restarted training around Alicante with the likes of Miguel Angel Martin Perdiguero, Angel Gonzalez Marchante, Santos Gonzalez and Jorge Ferrio.

Gonzalez is reported to have lost a lot of weight and to be close to racing fitness, although it remains to be seen which team he would ride for if the Spanish federation is convinced by the evidence presented to it and overturns his positive test.
