So it was fitting for Trek to introduce its totally redesigned Madone there amid much fanfare, thanks to a certain Lance Armstrong. A tanned and relaxed Armstrong bounded onto the stage with the 2008 Madone in hand after Trek boss John Burke and his top engineers described the two-year development process. Trek brought its top 100 dealers, media, and several international distributors to this lakefront event on Thursday, May 31, kicking off a weekend of Trek-centric activities, including a factory tour, police-escorted road ride with Lance, and participation in the 18th annual Trek 100 charity ride for the Milwaukee Area Childhood Cancer (MACC) fund. Highlights of the new Madone are three pronged: 1.) a 90mm bottom bracket shell, versus the industry-standard 68mm. Trek engineer Doug Cusack explained the reasoning is Trek's Precision Fit Technology concept of eliminating a threaded aluminum insert, replaced by Net Molding carbon technology to rely on the bearings fitting into the shell directly, saving 40 grams and increasing lateral downtube stiffness by 48 percent. 2.) an oversized fork steer that's 1-1/8" at the top, tapering to 1-1/2" at the fork crown. Trek felt that by eliminating the 90-degree bend where the fork crown transitions to the steer tube, an aluminum fork crown race can be replaced by Trek's Net Molded bearing race surface, similar to the technology used in the Madone's bottom bracket shell. 3.) a no-cut carbon seat mast/post, which could be called a seat cap, to save weight and eliminate the need to cut carbon fiber for sizing. Trek claims a 25 percent weight reduction compared to a standard carbon seatpost, while improving vertical compliance over the 2007 Madone by 39 percent. Their are a few seatcap options to dial in the correct saddle height. One of the most impressive revelations of the evening was Burke's announcement that the new 2008 Trek Madones are designed, built and ready to ship. The Madone line includes the top-of-the-line Madone 6.9, 6.9 Pro, 6.5, 6.5 Pro, 5.5, 5.5 Pro, 5.2, 5.2 Pro, 5.1, 5.1 WSD, and 6.5 WSD. Retail pricing ranges from $2,749 - $7,499US.
