Australia have named their squad for the world championships in Madrid at the end of next month. Cofidis sprinter Stuart O'Grady is among those even though there are doubts about his fitness following his withdrawal from his Cofidis team's line-up for the Vuelta, which starts this weekend. O'Grady, who finished fourth in last year's Worlds road race in Verona, is suffering with tendonitis in his left quadriceps.

Australia will trim down their squad to the required numbers on September 9. Nine of the 16-rider Elite Men's squad will contest the road race, with as many as three riders from the quartet of Cadel Evans, Brad McGee, Luke Roberts and defending TT champion Michael Rogers taking part in the time trial event.

This quartet have also been listed in the road squad together with Baden Cooke, Allan Davis, Simon Gerrans, Mathew Hayman, Aaron Kemps, Brett Lancaster, Robbie McEwen, O'Grady, Rory Sutherland, Henk Vogels, Matthew White and Matt Wilson.

Olympic road champion Sara Carrigan and World Cup leader Oenone Wood have been selected for the women's time trial event, and are joined in the road team by Katherine Bates, Natalie Bates, Rochelle Gilmore, Olivia Gollan, Helen Kelly and Emma Rickards. Two of these riders will be dropped from the final road team.

Four riders will make the cut for the under-23 road event from:ú Jonathon Clarke, James Meadley, Joel Pearson, Nicolas Sanderson, Christopher Sutton, David Tanner and William Walker. Mark Jamieson and Walker will contest the time trial.
