Following Wednesday's announcement by Discovery Channel that they are releasing no less than 11 riders at the end of this season including Michael Barry, the Canadian climber has revealed he has joined the long list of new recruits made by T-Mobile, who are having a clear-out of their own.

T-Mobile's new American team manager, Bob Stapleton, has said on the team's website that he and his colleagues are trying to cram eight months work into two, and that he wants his riders, including Barry, to be competitive in races beyond the Tour de France, which has tended to be the squad's overwhelming focus in recent seasons.

"In recent years, the team's results outside of the Tour were poor, especially in the last two years," Stapleton said. "Our goal now is to be competitive throughout the entire season with riders that bring the right character and qualities - both on and off the bike - and to no longer depend on just one or two stars to deliver."

Barry suffered a broken back at the Tour of Flanders back in April, but returned to racing in June. He will no doubt be hoping to earn the Tour place with T-Mobile that has not come his way with Discovery.
