Ivan Basso could be back racing as soon as Saturday's Tour of Lombardy after the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI) said it would be asking the Italian Cycling Federation to drop charges against the CSC rider stemming from the Puerto investigation in Spain. Basso was one of nine riders forced to withdraw from the Tour de France after being implicated in the Puerto affair in late June, but has always maintained he did not have any links with this arrested in Spain.
"This is good news," Basso told La Gazzetta dello Sport's website. "Although I don't know yet if I will race on Saturday. I need to speak with [CSC team boss] Bjarne Riis, and then we will decide."
This news follows on from a story printed in L'Equipe revealing that letters had been sent by the Spanish judicial team looking into the Puerto case to both the Spanish federation and the International Cycling Union recommending that no sanctions be taken against riders implicated in the affair. As well as Basso, this could also leave the way open to Jan Ullrich to return to racing.
