Belgian squad named for worlds

Boonen's back could dictate role in Germany

Belgian sprinter Tom Boonen has been included in Belgium's squad for the forthcoming world road race championships in Germany, although an injured back from the Tour of Spain could force him out of the event.

Belgian coach Carlo Bomans named Boonen among the nine-man squad for the September 26-30 championship in Stuttgart even though Boonen has a back injury and may not ride.

Philippe Gilbert and Stijn Devolder look set to be the top riders for the
event should Boonen not be in peak fitness.

"Philippe and Stijn are perfectly prepared and tailor-made for this type of course," said Bomans, who added Boonen could be used as a super domestique.
