Big names sign up for UK Bike Week

Mobile phone giant to sponsor annual event

As cycling in the UK continues to grow in popularity, mobile phone giant Nokia has announced its sponsorship of National Bike Week.

Designed to promote cycling as a way to stay fit and have fun, the annual event sees people all over the country getting on their bikes for the first time, or returning to cycling after many years.

Philip Darnton, chairman of Cycling England, said: “Plenty of parents have forgotten how much fun cycling was as a child. We want this year’s Bike Week to revive those memories and re-engage people with the benefits and enjoyment of cycling. We hope that taking part in a Bike Week event will act as a catalyst for people to cycle more regularly and enjoy the long term benefits of a healthier lifestyle.”

Nokia’s involvement in Bike Week, from June 14 to 22, underlines the growing visibility of the UK’s cycling community.

The growth has come thanks to a resurgence in cycling in congested major cities, along with the expansion of groups like cycling charity Sustrans and Cycling England.

Simon Ainslie, Nokia’s UK managing director, added: "Nokia's support for Bike Week is based on demonstrating how our latest technology can help encourage people to get out of their cars and onto their bikes without worrying about getting lost or how to get there."

Bike Week is encouraging everyone taking part to raise money for its official charity, Sport Relief so that everyone will be able to get active, have fun, and help turn someone’s life around while they’re at it.

Karl Reynolds, head of fundraising at Sport Relief, said: “We are thrilled to join the Bike Week team and hope that everyone who participates will raise as much as they can – every penny can help to change lives for the better in the UK and in some of the poorest countries in the world”
