PIC © TIM DE WAELE Boonen makes it four in E3 Prijs By Jeff Jones Tom Boonen (Quick.Step) has become the first rider to win four consecutive editions of the E3 Prijs Vlaanderen. The Belgian classics specialist beat Fabian Cancellara (CSC), Marcus Burghardt (T-Mobile) and Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas) in a four man sprint in Harelbeke. He described it as the "toughest victory of the four" and was suffering from cramps so badly at the finish that he couldn't even raise his arms in a victory salute. "I didn't have the luxury to make two or three attacks today," said Boonen about the race. "They definitely could have dropped me. In the last kilometre I was lucky that a super nervous Marcus Burghardt was like a young foal with unopened eyes and went after everything, while I could stay quite cool. I had enough room to take risks. Finally I crawled past Cancellara in the last metres." Boonen blamed his cramps on the simple fact that he hadn't drunk enough during the race. "It was treacherously warm today," he said. "Because the lead never got big enough, the team directors' cars couldn't get through. I got one bidon from the neutral car, which I drunk in one go. After the finish I heard that the others also had problems. If I was in pain, then my rivals were too, apparently." The race, which is always considered a perfect warm up for the Tour of Flanders, started in Harelbeke with 194 riders. Surprisingly, there was no early breakaway, and the bunch remained together over the first 135km. Marcel Sieberg (Milram) was the first to attack on the Boigneberg (67km to go), and gained 50 seconds before he was hauled back on the Stationsberg a couple of climbs later. On this climb, Stijn Devolder (Discovery Channel), Philippe Gilbert (Franaise des Jeux) and Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas) got a small gap, before being joined by Tom Boonen and Marcus Burghardt (T-Mobile) on the Taaienberg with 53km to go. Fabian Cancellara (CSC) was the next rider to get across to the leaders as the peloton rapidly reduced in size thanks to the efforts of the big men. Cance then dropped back to help his teammate Stuart O'Grady get across, giving CSC the numerical advantage in the now seven man breakaway. But it didn't last long, as O'Grady was dropped again on the Paterberg. He joined Oscar Freire (Rabobank) and Paolo Bettini (Quick.Step), who were mounting their own bridging attempt. On the Kwaremont with 33km to go, Bettini and O'Grady dropped Freire and closed in on the six leaders, with Bettini now getting some help from Boonen to make the junction. 13 seconds behind them, a group had formed containing Freire, his teammate Boogerd, Baden Cooke (Unibet), Ballan (Lampre), Johansen (CSC), Ivanov (Astana), Sentjens (Predictor). They got close, but it wasn't enough as Bettini lit it up on the Knokteberg with 23km to go. Bettini looked good until he broke his rear derailleur near the top and his race was over. After the summit of the Knokteberg, there were just four riders left of the breakaway: Boonen, Cancellara, Burghardt and Quinziato. They battled a headwind all the way back to Harelbeke, holding a half-minute advantage over the next group of chasers. None of them attempted to break away before the final kilometre, when first Burghardt, then Quinziato tried to pre-empt the sprint. Quinziato and Cancellara ended up leading it out in the final 250m, and Boonen had to put in an enormous effort to come around Cancellara for his fourth successive win. Freire also won the race in 2005 and 2006, and beat Nick Nuyens (Cofidis) and Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile) to take the hattrick. As usual, the race became one of attrition once the bunch hit the five 17km finishing circuits. On the final lap, Freire was in the leading group together with teammate Boogerd, Nuyens, Kirchen, Bjrn Leukemans (Predictor-Lotto), Enrico Gasparotto (Liquigas) and Karsten Kroon (CSC). Leukemans tried to escape with four kilometres to go, but the final ascent of the Alsemberg proved to be too much, and he was overhauled by the rest. Freire could count on Boogerd to keep things together before he unleashed his sprint to beat Nuyens and Kirchen at the top. The powerhouse German, victor in 1999 and 2004, won Sunday's crucial second stage to Montherm. He backed it up with a seventh place in the afternoon's time trial to clinch the overall by 34 seconds over Thomas Lvkvist (Franaise Des Jeux) and Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne). The first stage between Asfeld and Charleville-Mzires finished in a bunch sprint with Olaf Pollack (Wiesenhof-Felt) triumphing over Angelo Furlan (Crdit Agricole) and Mikel Gazta¤aga Echeverria (Agritubel). The race saw the return of Damiano Cunego (Lampre), who tried to escape with 3km to go but was chased down by the bunch. Sunday saw Jens Voigt asserting his authority over the bunch, with a solo victory in the morning stage between Les Vieilles Forges and Montherm. Voigt attacked with 20km to go and finished with a 48 second gap over Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) and Andreas Klden (Astana). In the afternoon's 8.3km time trial around Charleville-Mzires Thomas Lvkvist (Franaise Des Jeux) put in a great ride to win and move himself up to second on GC. A consistent Valverde was second with Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) third. Voigt was seventh at 14 seconds, but had plenty of time in hand to keep the yellow leader's jersey. CSC has now won the Critrium International four times in a row, with Voigt (2004, 2007), Bobby Julich (2005) and Ivan Basso (2006). Scarponi finished second behind Ricardo Ricc (Saunier Duval) in the final stage in Sassuolo after the two had broken clear from the group containing Pierfelici. The gap between the two was only 21 seconds at the finish, but that was enough to promote Scarponi to first and Ricc to second on GC, while Pierfelici slipped to third.
