Boxing champ Gary Mason killed in cycling crash

Van driver arrested over London collision

Former British heavyweight boxing champion Gary Mason has been killed in a crash with a van while out cycling.

The 48-year-old was riding a mountain bike along Sandy Lane South in Wallington, south London at 6.15am yesterday when he was in collision with the white Vauxhall van.

He was pronounced dead at the scene an hour later. Metropolitan Police said the 43-year-old van driver had been arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving and released on bail until March pending further inquiries.

Mason won the British heavyweight title in 1989 and only suffered one defeat in his 38-fight professional career – to Lennox Lewis in 1991. He appeared on the television show Gladiators after retiring in 1994 and briefly played rugby league with the London Broncos.
