Britain's best female XC racer left out of Team GB selection

No place for senior cross country female riders in Fort William

Jenny Copnall, who recently won her fourth British Cross Country title, has been left out of the selection for the World Championships which are being held in Fort William, Scotland from 3-9 September.

In fact, no female rider will be representing Britain in the senior cross country event, despite there being a full home nation allocation of seven places available. Jenny commented in a press release on hearing the news: "I firmly view my non selection as an attack not only on me but on our domestic mountain bike scene and on my rivals over the years since it devalues what we have all sought to create and all of our achievements. How can we possibly expect the women and girls within our wonderful sport to aspire to be a champion if the champion herself is disregarded?"

As MBUK's Matt Skinner explains in his blog entry, this selection omission will have a knock-on effect for the Beijing Olympics, and will handicap future female XC riders.

We will post the reply from British Cycling as soon as we get it, but for Jenny Copnall's reaction to being left out of Team GB click here.
