Challenging weather at Merida Mountain Bike Marathon

Crickhowell race attracts 900 riders

The second round of the 2009 Merida Bikes MTB Marathon Series powered by MBUK took place at the weekend in Crickhowell, Wales.

With more than 900 riders taking part, a new venue nestled between the Black Mountains and Brecon Beacons, and weather varying from sunny spells to rain and hail storms, the riders had a real challenge on their hands.

The first rider to complete the 35km mini-marathon crossed the line in just over two hours, while the last riders on the full 80km marathon made it back to the event village in eight hours and 14 minutes.

Organisers said the course held up pretty well considering the weather, and they hope to return to Crickhowell in years to come.

The next Mountain Bike Marathon takes place in Llanwrtyd Wells on 5 July, alongside the first round of the Gore Bike Wear Sportive series. For more information, go to
