From the hospital bed...

I just spoke to Chris in Salisbury Hospital and he'd like to dispel some of the rumours he's been hearing. He hasn't broken his back in eight places and fractured both ankles and he hopes to be out of hospital this Friday. What he did was bad enough though:

"I suppose it was over confidence. I'd done a huge step-down the day before, one which had a long run up, and I'd been surprised how easy it was. So that got me thinking about the huge one I've been saving up. My biggest ever.

"It's in a quarry near here, and you start from a 60 foot cliff. It's a step down gap jump, I suppose it's 40 foot wide and you'd be dropping around 35 feet.

"I wasn't going to do it. I just thought I'd have a look. I cleared the run up and so on. Then I just went for it and came up short on it. The run in and run out weren't as good as the other one and I got the speed wrong."

How much too short did you land?

"Not that short, the front wheel got onto the landing, but I was off the bike by then, I jumped over the bars because I thought I was going to pile into the cliff. I landed straight on my arse. It wasn't good."

So what did you do to yourself?

"I've got a compression fraction of the L2 vertebra and I've fractured my left ankle and torn some ligaments. The ankle's been plated up already and is in plaster. But I think I'll be back riding again in three month, because the back is mending well. I just need a back brace and I'll be getting around OK.

"I really want to go on that foreign trip you're planning."

If you're fit you're on it. That's good news for a change, thanks Chris.
