Adidas-Slopestyle claims another victim
UK freerider Chris Smith has broken his shoulder practicing for the Adidas Slopestyle event which was held in Saalbach Hinterglemm this weekend. Chris had been riding his downhill bike but decided to try the course on his hardtail so that he could throw some barspins into his run. On one of the obstacles though he ran wide, landing on a soft patch of earth which catapulted him over the handlebars: "I flipped over a couple of times and when I picked myself up my shoulder was round by my nipple. I was like 'bugger'. The ambulance people took me off to hospital and put me on a morphine drip - I'd dislocated one shoulder and broken the other. I reckon I'd have ridden it out if I was on my full-sus bike. My hardtail's set up really hard and it's only got 24" wheels...
"I spoke to Cedric Gracia - he did something similar a while back - and he reckons I could be back in three weeks. My doctor's sending me to a specialist so we'll see what he says. I'd like to be back in time for NASS (yeah right! - Ed).

We asked Chris what he's doing at the moment and apparently he's "just sitting in the garden getting my Mum to make me cups of tea". Nice. Chris also told us that he's planning to move back to 26" wheels for dirt jumping and skate parks: "When I go to international comps all the other riders take the piss out of me saying I'm on a kiddies bike or a BMX and that I'm cheating. I used to ride 26"s so there's no reason why I shouldn't again."

The Adidias-Slopestyle event was eventually won by Darren Berreclough with Aaron Chase in second. Expect a report in an upcoming issue of the mag...
