CLIC24 2008

24 hour enduro in the Mendip Hills

Although not taking the honour of the first 24-hour enduro of the UK season (that goes to the Straffpuffer on January 19th-20th), CLIC24 does the best job of raising a huge wad of cash for charity.

Over the last six years CLIC has raised an impressive £165,000 for children’s cancer and leukaemia charity CLIC Sargent. Now entries are being taken for the next instalment in this remarkable event based in the picturesque Mendip Hills in Somerset. A 10-mile course on the Mendip Hills, based at the Charterhouse Centre near Blagdon, awaits you along with great music, food and a remarkably chilled atmosphere.

The date for this year’s race is May 10th–11th. With entries limited to 500 now’s the time to commit to your first (or second) 24hr race of the year. What better preparation can you get for riding Mountain Mayhem or SITS, whilst doing some good not only for yourself but also for charity?

Neil Wilkins explained the thoughts behind CLIC 24: "When I came up with the idea of CLIC24 I hadn't a clue it would grab the imagination of riders and sponsors in the way it has," he said. "One night in the middle of winter I was putting together the ride calendar for the local bike club and thought it would be good to give something back for all that time and money we take from our families to satisfy our desire for saddle time and better bikes and gear. Doing it for charity seemed fair, and why not make a weekend of it, to feed our insatiable appetites for time on the trails. And so CLIC24 was born.

"This seems like ages ago, now we are into our seventh year. I took the decision not to let it become a commercial event with lots of trade stands and moneymaking ventures. Instead we are keeping it real with a simple objective of a laid back atmosphere and a weekend of great riding.

"Yes we have some great facilities. We'll have hot showers, toilets and more of that great food at a fully loaded outdoor event centre, including en-suite accommodation for the team and solo rider with the most sponsorship. But the simplicity of it all, and the fact you have to raise money to help improve the lives of children suffering from cancer and leukaemia, makes CLIC24 something different and something very special."

You can ride CLIC24 solo, or in a single-sex or mixed team, with up to four riders. Entry to the event is free, but the CLIC24 objective is to raise as much money as possible for the charity, where 90 percent of the profits go. So first off you'll need to pay a non-refundable deposit of £30 yourself, or £30 non-refundable deposit for each rider in a team. This isn't like all the other 24-hour events. With CLIC24 No sponsorship = No ride.
