Contador 'may quit cycling' if banned for doping

Reigning Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has threatened to quit cycling if he's banned for doping.
"If this isn't resolved favourably and in just fashion then I'd have to consider whether I'd ever get back on a bike," he told Spanish broadcasters Telecinco after testing positive for clenbuterol, a banned substance.
Contador has been provisionally suspended by the International Cycling Union (UCI) after he announced his positive test on Friday – but he insists he was the victim of contaminated food. "I think this will all be resolved in a favourable manner," he told Telecinco.

The three-time Tour champion tested positive for a minute quantity of the substance on 21 July. UCI chief Pat McQuaid says he could have his fate decided by scientists from the union and World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
World cycling's ruling body says only a "very small concentration" of the drug was found and that the case warranted "further scientific investigation" because the Cologne laboratory which detected the clenbuterol is known to be able to detect the tiniest traces of drugs.
"The concentration found by the laboratory was estimated at 50 picograms, which is 400 times less than what the antidoping laboratories accredited by WADA must be able to detect," the UCI said on Friday, adding that analysis of a B sample "confirmed the first".

You have got to feel for Contador at this point as the trace is so low but it's an opportunity for the authorities to show off how sensitive their testing is.
I wish the authorities would spend the same amount of effort punishing those who are found to be cheating and follow Contadors threat and ban them for life.
The threat to quit should be heeded by those less scrupulous riders who yo-yo in and out of the sport when they get caught.

I was taught cheating was cheating no matter how minor the act. Isn't doping the same, no matter how "low the level"?

According to the New York Times, testers also found evidence of a drip-bag plasticizer in Contador's blood.
Personally, I've always found the Spanish and Italian Tour performances a little hard to believe. Wasn't there a year when Spanish riders made up 14 of the top 28 in the Tour?

May quit cycling if he's banned is rather a departure from proclaiming his innocence. Sounds a lot like blackmail. Quit cycling if you're banned? Good.

What else would he do? Even if banned, he'll try something else; Tri, Duathlons... they guy is a born endurance athlete.

So he will Quit???!!!...then QUIT...Cycling will not DIE without Contador! It is too bad this is happening, and even if it was only 50 pico grams, what about word that evidence of a Drip Bag? I don't think, if true, that the meat had any plastic residue from a Blood Drip Bag. I will withhold judgement until the UCI completes their investigation. BUT...If Contador wants to quit...Go For It! Sounds like a CryBaby to me!

I won't comment on the individual case, but this is the same stuff as we hear in every similar case. I just don't see what it's supposed to achieve. Every athlete has die hard fans who will never believe anything bad about them, and those fans will buy this unquestioningly. There are his detractors who automatically believe he is guilty. And there's the majority who look at it sensibly and are not going to be swayed by a war of words.
"Favourably and in a just fashion" See what he did there? He put the concept of justice right alongside a verdict in his favour. Some PR or lawyer wrote a clever little speech trying to subtly influence people's views. Yes you expect a denial, but trying that sort of spin will convince nobody.

I wonder if this plasticizer found in a test not formally sanctioned by WADA, also found in IV bags used to hydrate athletes after competition. Is hydrating via IV illegal?
