Baden Cooke took his first win in Europe for well over a year with victory on the opening stage of the Tour of Poland on Monday. The Australian took the bunch gallop ahead of Luca Paolini and Francesco Chicchi after a crash on the final corner had split the peloton.

The start of this latest event in the ProTour series was delayed for an hour to accommodate the late arrival of the Euskaltel and Illes Balears teams, whose flight from San Sebastian in Spain had been delayed by bad weather.

Although tardy, the Spaniards at least managed to get to Spain, a feat beyond a quartet of Kazakhs, who had to scratch from the event at the last moment. The biggest name to miss out was T-Mobile's Alexandre Vinokourov, who turned up at Nice airport with the correct visa for Poland but without a passport, which had not been returned to him. Compatriots Dmitri Fofonov (Cofidis), Andrei Kashechkin (Crdit Agricole) and Dmitri Muravyev (Crdit Agricole) were caught out in the same way.
