Damiano Cunego's ambition to face Lance Armstrong at least once at the Tour de France will not come to fruition after he pulled out of next month's race. The Lampre-Caffita rider has been diagnosed with glandular fever and made the decision after consulting with his team's management and doctors on Tuesday.
Cunego is set to be replaced as Lampre's team leader at the Tour by Gilberto Simoni, who will also lead the team's challenge in Sunday's Italian road championship in Pescara.
Cunego is unlikely to ride the Vuelta in September, but focus on the defence of his Tour of Lombardy title and on the series of Italian one-day races in August.
