Aldi UK's discount cycling gear almost here
We love to see the big German discount retailers stocking affordable cycling kit which, according to many of our comment posters, is of reasonably good quality.
So, shortly after we featured the apparently incredible value being offered by Lidl with their line of bike bits, we feel duty bound to once again draw your attention to the forthcoming release of Aldi's equally impressive-looking range of offers.
The gear goes on sale next Thursday, May 1 and among other bargain basement priced items are the following: Coolmax shorts are priced at an impressive £4.99 and are available in lycra or woven, with an antibacterial seat pad, grip elastic on the legs and reflective prints for safety. The woven shorts have the added bonus of a removable inner slip and are available in black from sizes small to large for women and sizes small to extra large for men.
If it’s a pair of cheap bib shorts you’re after then the £6.99 bibs with antibacterial seat pad, grip elastic or silicone binding on the hem with reflective striping for safety at night might be just what you’re after.
For cooler mornings the £5.99 unisex gilet is an ideal 'keep-in-your-bag-til-it's-needed' item. It’s windproof and water repellent with reflective piping and mesh panelling for breathability. Sizes: small to extra large. Colours: pink, royal/black, red/black and black.
If the gilet isn’t enough then the jacket at £9.99 isn’t going to break the bank either. It is breathable, waterproof and available in sizes small to extra large and in a selection of colours including pink/black for women and royal/black, black/red, orange/black for men. All the jackets are finished with reflective details for safety.
The short-sleeved shirt is made from breathable fabric, featuring a zip neck and reflective piping. Available in sizes small to extra large, in a selection of colours including pink for women and orange/white/black/, white/black/red and royal/white/black print for men. It’s priced at £4.99.
Aldi will also have many cycling accessories and essentials, including lightweight cotton cycling socks at £2.49 per pair, cycling gloves at £2.99 per pair and cycling underwear at £3.99.
We've asked for some equipment samples from our friends at Aldi and hope to do some head-to-head comparisons with their Lidl equivalents.

I bought some of Aldi's Crane brand cycling kit for the winter, and it has been superb.
Pair of Overshoes AND a skullcap for £3.99, the overshoes took about 3 months of everyday use before one of them gave up the zip, local store still had a handful left, and one pair was my size so bought them too.
I also bought 2 winter cycling jackets at £14.99 each, brilliant, 1 has been used almost everyday since October, warm windproof, and keeps you dry in anything up to a real downpour.
Pair of winter gloves at £3.99, perhaps the Achilles heel, not up to the standard of the other products, but still very good.
Finally the socks, just ace.
Some will say how can it be any good at these prices?
Well it is good, very good, I don't know how they can sell the stuff at these prices, and frankly I don't care, as long as it saves me cash :-)

I have bought shorts and summer jersey in the past, also helmet and winter jacket. Totally impressed.
However, I also buy some 'cheap' kit from Lidl. They have cycling gear in now, if there is any good stuff left. I bought a pair of SPD shoes and matching pedals last year, and have about 3k miles with no problems or even noticeable wear!

Yes I have to agree for the price it does the job, brought the overshoes for 07/08 winter and they worked well until the real downpours, the lumo jacket was not very breathable but keeps you dry and doubles up as a running jacket too.
The shorts are just as good as halfords and for the commute to work perfect, at the end of the winter i will throw them away and will but another cheap pair.
At these prices you might as well use abuse, throw away and then buy again.
my suggestion thou is to mix and match with quality items, there is no subsiture for a good all round wind proof jacket you should spend the money on that.

Great kit for the price. Sometimes on charity/sportives it looks like team Aldi as theres so much of their kit out there.
They used to do cycle shoes (SPD's) for £19.99, I've had mine 4 years and use them to commute and they seem to never wear out.
Well worth checking Aldi out when this stuff comes out, at these prices you have nothing to lose.

The £14.99 soft shell waterproof/windproof jackets are the business, my Cannondale one has packed in again and to be honest is not as good as the aldi one. I have just used it to do the coast to coast in at easter (and the weather was pretty poo) only worn with a long sleeved jersey and it was brilliant.
Crane sports are huge in Europe by the way - hence how they do it so cheap

I've been buying the cycling gear and accessories at Aldi for years and the quality is very good for the money. Where else can you get a complete winter cycling kit including gloves for £20? I still have my first set 3 years on - washes well and has stood the test of time. The Base layers are super value for money and really work. Only thing to watch for is to be there early on the day of the bike specials - they soon go and later appear on Ebay :-(

Just been this morning (1 May) and bought the ladies' gilet, and short sleeved cycling top. Gilet is actually really good - very soft and a good fit, and the jersey is actually a better fit than some of the more expensive stuff I've bought. Will wear the gilet for running in autumn too. Surprised at how many people there were at the store (at 9 am) but many had obviously got there early to get the cycling gear - saw one woman buy 8 pairs of shorts and wondered if people sell them on! Also a brilliant buy - the cycle glasses with three interchangeable lenses in polycarbonate are £2.99(!!!) I've got some Oakleys but have bought the Aldi ones before, and find them absolutely fine. Sick of paying OTT prices for running/cycling gear anyway.

Just tried the Aldi kit for the first time. Cycling computer, gloves, track pump, water bottle, glasses and windproof/waterproof jacket for £28.
Having taken them home and given a good check over I'm going back in tomorrow to get a spare set of gloves and glasses!!
Brilliant value

Any ideas when this will be back at Aldi?
I need some cycle shoes and don't want to pay £50!
