Cycle Show 09: Ground Effect clothing, SealSkinz gloves

Keep warm and dry this winter

New Zealand-based Ground Effect produce clothing suitable for all types of riding. We checked out their new winter clothing range at the Cycle Show, which included some toasty-looking bib tights, waterproof 3/4-length shorts and a versatile jacket/gilet.

We were hankering after their Snake Bite bibs on our freezing commute this morning. They feature a merino vest up top and fast-drying four-way stretch tights down below, with reflective piping for night-time visibility and calf zips so they can be easily pulled on and off.

The Heatwave Merino blend (62 percent merino wool, 38 percent polyester) ensures a good balance of heat retention and wicking properties, so chilblains should be a thing of the past. RRP is £100.

Ground Effect’s £125 Flash Gordon (see main pic at the top of this article) is a water resistant, windproof lightweight jacket that looks like the perfect commuting coat.

It folds down into a tiny package, and is available in bright orange or yellow for maximum visibility. Reflective trim, drop tail, zipped rear pockets and a fleece-lined collar are other highlights. If the sun starts smiling and things get warm, you can always zip off the sleeves.

The £75 Helter Skelter 3/4-length shorts use HydroFoil fabric and fully taped seams to keep the rain at bay. They fold into themselves so you can stash them in your riding pack, and have reflective labels for night-time visibility. Velcro leg fasteners should help keep out any unwanted draughts.

Winter clothing experts SealSkinz have some new women's gloves which look ideal for small-fingered riders. Using the company’s windproof, waterproof and breathable fabric, the £30 gloves have sturdy Velcro fasteners and reflective piping. Padding on the palm and fingers is positioned at the pressure points to alleviate aches.
