Cycling goes Metal in Marrakech

Alexander Milas, editor of our sister mag (well, more of a cousin) Metal Hammer, is about to tackle a 130 mile ride in Marrakech to raise money for a number of children’s charities.

The ride is being organised by Rod Smallwood, who among other things manages Iron Maiden. It starts this Sunday and will take five days, all off-road, involving around 40 people. The aim is to raise £1 million for Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy, Childline and the Teenage Cancer Trust under the auspices of a group called The Truants. So far £424K has been raised through bike rides and other activities.

"I'll be cycling over 130 miles around Marrakech, and through the foothills of the Atlas mountains in what I am reliably informed is some serious heat," said Milas. "I've never been there, and people who have been just kinda cackle when I tell them what I'm doing."

Asked why he's doing it, Alex said that he's passionate about the cause: "It’s for the kids, and it’s metal. The bottom line is this isn't about me, but some incredibly worthy causes and very deserving people that have been hit hard in these tough economic times, and I’ve been genuinely inspired by people’s generosity in supporting my efforts, both in encouragement and their donations. I’ve still got a lot of preparation to do, but it’s already been a great experience."

He'll be blogging about it for BikeRadar next week, stay tuned.
