With Danilo Di Luca already on top of the rest at the Giro d'Italia after a couple of stage wins, Liquigas-Bianchi continued its great run of form at the second stage of the Tour of Catalonia today, which ended in a debut win for Enrico Gasparotto. The 23-year-old galloper held off another young sprint prospect, Fassa Bortolo's Claudio Corioni in Cambrils, with a number of more experienced riders following in the wake of the precocious pair.

The stage featured four categorised climbs. After just 5km of racing, Kaiku's Jos Antonio Lopez went away on his own, and was quickly joined by Relax's Xavier Florencio and Crdit Agricole's Benoit Poilvet. The trio built a lead of eight minutes, which didn't seem to be enough to give them the stage win, but very nearly proved sufficient as Lopez was caught by the bunch just 6km from the line.

There was no change in the overall standings, which continue to be led by defending champion Miguel Angel Martin Perdiguero following Phonak's opening team time trial victory.
