Russell Dowing and Nicole Cooke were both crowned National Champion this weekend in Yorkshire. For 26 year-old Dowing, winning the nationals fulfilled a lifetime's ambition, Cooke on the other hand is used to wearing the blue and red stripes of the National Champion's jersey having won it six years on the trot.
In the men's race Downing, the younger of the two Downing brothers (elder brother Dean is out at the moment with an injury sustained in America) had to hold off tough oppopsition from the likes of European based pros like Jeremy Hunt and Roger Hammond. In the end, the tactics employed by Downing's Recycling.co.uk/MGXpower team worked out perfectly with the diminutive Downing outsprinting his break-away companion Cummings at the finish.

In the women's event Nicole Cooke won the sprint from a breakaway group, pipping Rachel Heal to the line.

Sunday wasn't the best of days for the boys from Planet-X/Cycling Plus, with the team's best finisher being John Tanner in 14th.
