Actor Kelvin Fletcher, who plays Andy Sugden in the UK soap Emmerdale, and ex-motocross world champion Jamie Dobb have teamed up for a 1000 mile ride to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation charity.

The pair are cycling from the Catalonian Moto GP in Barcelona to the Donnington Park motor racing circuit in the UK, a journey that will take them 10 days and is due to finish on 18 June, just before the British Grand Prix. They are calling on the general public to help their cause by visiting www.cycleofwishes.com and making a donation.

"Having retired from competition in 2004 after racing for over 18 years professionally I realised how fortunate I have been," said Jamie Dobb. "I am blessed with a beautiful family, I have visited many places, met some great people and I am in good health. All this can sometimes be taken for granted. I am excited about the task ahead as it will allow me to give a little back and will help grant a few wishes to people who have been less fortunate."

Kelvin said he was more than happy to take up the 100 mile a day challenge. "Over the years, working alongside various charities, I have been privileged to meet some exceptionally brave and courageous children who seem so humble and happy despite their awful circumstances," he said. "It's then you realise just how precious life is, and unfortunately, how it's often very cruel, I've been blessed with good health and want to do as much as I can to help those who have not."

The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants wishes to children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses. Founded in 1986, it has granted over 4,700 wishes in the last 22 years. Its aim is to grant 21 wishes a week by the year 2010.
