First look: Garneau Diamond helmet

A 40-vent helmet!

The 2009 Garneau Diamond helmet has 40 vents and weighs a reported 285g, meeting safety standards, according to the company. Garneau is celebrating 25 years in business, hence the diamond reference.

How did Garneau do it? With its patented Super MSB (Monocoque Structural Base) and EXI (EXO-INSERT) technologies: the monocoque polycarbonate base acts like an exo-skeleton, providing more than a fashion statement or protection against abrasion for the base of the helmet. According to Garneau, this is one of the strongest ways to achieve structural strength. Instead of using internal rib cages, which add more weight and limit the number of vents, Garneau engineered two polycarbonate bars placed inside the helmet at specific structural location and nine carbon bridge inserts which provide the strength exactly where it is needed.

The result:  more vents, less weight.
