First look: Shimano's new AM45 / AM41 mountain bike shoes

By Matthew Cole | Tuesday, Jul 13, 2010 9.00am

This year’s BikeRadar Live had plenty of new bikes and gear on display, as well as hundreds of demo bikes for visitors to ride on the Brands Hatch circuit and purpose-built mountain bike trails.

While we were wandering through the Madison village, which made up part of the expo area, we got a sneak peak at Shimano’s new AM45 and AM41 mountain bike shoes, which are a development of the popular MP56 and MP66 models.

Set to hit shops in October, the £69.99 AM45 is an all-mountain/trail SPD shoe with a semi-high top design for ankle protection and closed upper construction to keep out trail debris and dirt. The £79.99 AM41 is a version for flat pedal riders, with a Vibram sole for maximum grip.

If these new shoes are an improvement on the highly-rated MP models – which they will complement, not replace – then they're going to raise the bar for trail riding footwear. Keep your eye on BikeRadar for a full review soon.

  • Jesus christ. Just when you thought Shimano AM's couldn't get any uglier...

  • Mmmm orthopedic :)

  • It's not like FiveTen's are pretty either though is it?!

  • Alb - fair point, but the Freeriders, which are the close equivalent in the 5:10 range to AM's, are much better looking. These are like trainers you'd get from Clarks in the 80s.

  • Asolutely hideous, like something you buy for a tenner in a discount shoe shop.

  • Well... I have some MP66s which I like (unless it is raining!) and I think the AM45s above look a lot better. I want some!

  • They look good in the flesh. Want.

  • I will get a pair!

  • I think that they look pretty cool. I will get a pair. Well one Shimano!

  • Just bought a pair of AM41's. Nice and grippy and really comfy too. Just make sure you buy one size up as for some reason Shimano can't do UK sizes!?! They do look a bit special but they sure do the job.

  • I have been riding the flat sole version of the AM 41 for the past four months, ~ 60 rides, mostly in muddy conditions,on pinned pedals (Nuke Proof Electrons).

They are very stiff out of the box, but soften substantially with hard use. In contrast to Five Ten Impacts they are better made, less bukly, lighter weight, flat sole and low profile rand/heel/toe make them a much better riding shoe.

Granted they hit the top of the fugly scale, but they aren't meant for wearing around campus. I used a silver sharpie to color the stripes white, swapped out the laces for black, and added a couple lace holes at the top to help cinch them down.

Worth the money, best riding shoe I have used.

Prev shoes: Five Ten Impact, Five Ten Baron, Five Ten Freeride.
