First look: Specialized Command Post

By BikeRadar

Specialized announces the launch of its Command Post, an adjustable travel seatpost that gives mountain riders the ability to change saddle height with the flick of a handlebar-mounted switch.

Developed by the Suspension Technology Group at Specialized in Morgan Hill, California, the Command Post provides three saddle height options, so serious riders can change their stance mid-ride depending on the terrain and conditions—all with the flick of a switch. Its 100mm of adjustable range is denoted by three saddle positions—Power (when the saddle is at full height); Cruiser (35mm below the Power position); and Descender (100mm below the Power position).

The Command Post operates on an internal mechanical collet-based locking system with a low-pressure air actuated return spring (shown), which (set from the factory at 25psi) provides an ample return speed when raising the saddle to a higher position. The user-adjustable range (20 to 30 psi) gives riders the ability to slow down or speed up saddle rise, depending on rider preference. Rider weight simply guides the saddle down to a lower position when the remote lever is depressed.

The Command Post is available as aftermarket equipment and comes stock on 2009 Enduro Pro and S-Works models. Command Posts ship with both left- and right-handed forged aluminum remote levers, giving riders full control over their cockpit configuration. According to Specialized, the saddle mount is the standard wedge and rail clamp assembly common on most Specialized bike models; the durable aluminum tubing, 30.9mm-diameter seatpost and shaft assemblies provide years of trouble-free performance. Retail price to be determined.

  • Good to see more adjustable seatposts. Seems like there are four to choose from at the moment? More competition is good. Better reliability as they get developed and cheaper prices. Next few years adjustable seatposts are going to be big I think. I'm just wondering whether to jump on the bandwagon yet. I change my saddle height loads of times over the course of a ride. Especially good to see such a big name bring out a post.

  • I agree. The amount of times I had to lower my saddle on the 7 Stanes was crazy. I even had to have my Thomson seatpoat chopped down so I could lower the saddle a bit more for the black runs. Getting an adjustable post like this one would be a lifesaver...

  • Is there any information about the sealing on it? If it was capable of surviving in our typical weather, I would definitely consider getting one. Also, what saddle is that? It looks pimpy compared to the Phenom I have on my S-Works FSR.

I kept getting snagged on it too....

  • dirtbiker100 - 4 to choose from? I am aware of the Gravity Dropper and the Maverick/Crank Bros one (it's the same design manufactured by both companies), but not aware of any others... would be interested to learn of more as I'm keen to get one too.

Just hope the specialized one comes out in 27.2mm diameter... not holding my breath though :(

  • looks very interesting.

I've got the Joplin and apart from the maintainance issue it is a fabulous bit of kit. The only problem is the weight 500g for a seatpost is a lot. But still, flipping the saddle up and down over singletrack is awsome.

adjustable seatposts will be the next big thing - not sure about the "cruise" position though - I only use all up or all down, in between has no real function...

  • This one looks good, has rave reviews and has 5" of drop, its also cheaper

    This one looks good,cheaper also

  • There are a few others, 1 I can think of off the top of my head is the AMP= All Mountain post. Only aware of it in America, so you'd have to import them yerself.

  • Oh, I have the Superstar one. Very pleased with it...
