First look: Supernova E3 dynamo light

German LEDs for on and off road

Supernova are a German company who specialise in producing dynamo lights for on- and off-road use, and they have some updated models for 2010.

The Supernova E3 has been improved and now becomes the E3 PRO – offering a claimed 275 lumens with a newly developed glare-free lens perfect for road riding.

Updated electronics and standlight capacitor provide more brightness at low speeds, eliminating the usual dynamo-light flickering, and the new capacitor gives a brighter five-minute stand light. You can buy the E3 PRO with a number of options, but the model with a lefty bracket costs £170.

Although Supernova say the E3 PRO works quite well for off-road use, their E3 Triple has been developed specifically for 24-hour racing. It was ridden to victory by Olympic gold medal winner Bart Brentjens and his four-man team at this year's Rad Am Ring enduro held on the Nurburgring race track in Germany. Pumping out 680 lumens at high power, the E3 Triple weighs 130g and costs £245 with a bar mount.

Nik Heathman of UK distributors Amba Marketing said the lights were designed to be future-proof. He said: “Supernova can upgrade the LEDs at a future date for £40-60. Other benefits are that there is no battery to degrade over time – generally two to three seasons is all you get from a cell on a battery light.”
