Former Lotto and US Postal pro Stive Vermaut has died after suffering a heart attack earlier this mo
The former Lotto and US Postal rider, Stive Vermaut, died early on Wednesday morning, having failed to recover consciousness after a heart attack on June 13. The 28-year-old had sustained serious brain damage as a result of the cardiac arrest and never recovered. The Belgian was returning home from a Sunday morning bike-ride when he suffered the heart attack. He was promptly transported to the Sacr Coeur hospital in Roulers, north-west Belgium, where he remained, in a coma, until this morning. Vermaut had been forced to end his career in the pro elite two years ago following a series of heart scares, the first of which occurred at the 2002 Trofeo Laigueglia. Doctors had attributed his heart problems to a congenital defect.
